This principle is so important because many pastors refuse to speak on the subject of giving because they fear that they will alienate their congregations. Rather than teach the biblical truth about giving, they instead choose to avoid the subject altogether. Often, this avoidance may be the fear of man. God will provide. Be reminded of the providence of God.
He will take care of you. He never has budget cuts or financial shortages, and He knows your situation. God uses trials to push us closer to Him. He uses trials to increase our faith and improve our prayers. Be reminded that God wants you to pray to him in every situation you face. Practical Advice Preach faithfully. The best antidote is faithful preaching of the Word. If the Bible says it, you should preach it.
Do not shrink from the subject of giving, but carefully, lovingly, and occasionally inform them of what the Bible says. Done properly, this will not come across as nagging. Bring in outside help. One way to extricate the pastor from the difficulty of always addressing tithing is to bring in outside help. Hosting financial seminars, small group studies, or special classes on the subject is a great place to start. Consider other options. Thanks again, Lon.
God doesnt need our money… never has, never will except the fact remains the bible mentions money as much as it speaks of Love…So, a tenth is a tenth no mater how much you have… time, food, animals, talents, other resources. Old testimate Law and New testament Grace are still in the same bible I have. One does not overide the other. I am not a Christian theologian, I consider myself a Christian practicioner… much like a country Dr.
We must not try to put God in a box but allow ourselves to be guided along the straight and narrow road. I personally believe a pastor would be doing a diservice to those in his flock by not teaching what God breathed into man to write about in the Bible. Most definately the great commission and love. Much of which cannot be done without the likes of money, time , food, animals.
And besides most everybody fudges the actual amount they claim on their taxes anyway… like God doesnt see that. Thanks for the interesting subject matter. Thanks for sharing your perspective. I think the covenants differ in this detail as well. In any case, lets give with joy to pursue the mission Jesus charged us with. I beg to differ that one Covenant does not over-ride the other. New means new as in New Covenant. Jesus said Old wine and new wine do not mix.
Old and New are different as day and night! Hebrews If the first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no need for a second covenant to replace it. Reblogged this on KiruiK. Matthew Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Thank you for pointing this out. Though you may not agree with my perspective feel free to comment on it there. I feel like this is a post written with tunnel vision. The way you write makes it seem as if all pastors that teach tithing also teach the blessing and the curse with it.
This is not true. I believe in tithing. And I believe God has called us as Christians to tithe. But I also know that through Christ I am not subject to any curses because Christ has taken on my punishment.
I am not under a curse whether or not I tithe. I also do not give so that God will bless me. I give because I enjoy giving to support my church and its ministerial outreaches to the community. And I also give because I believe God has called us to do so. The two do not necessarily go hand-in-hand. Well said and point taken. I suppose I have also heard the rare sermon that taught tithing you way you have represented it here.
I think if pastors were more focused on inspiring their churches to focus on the Great Commission, we would find a lot more given. Thanks for your comment, Lon. I wholeheartedly agreed your point on tithing here, Lon. I also concord with Ryan Cunningham. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I hope this discussion helps us pursue and preach Christ Jesus wholeheartedly. Am saddened by the information given above.
First Jesus said that he did not come to abolish the law of Moses but to fulfill it. Tithing was one of the laws. Just like do not steal, kill or covet… May the Lord help us.
Paul said there shall arise many false prophets among us. I am familiar with the passage you referred to. But I wish you joy as you give to support the gospel mission Jesus gave to His followers. Hi, I think you missed the mark, this passage does not exactly nullify the importance of tithing, it only reveals some fundamental truths about the reasons for tithing especially in the new testament dispensation. From where I come from in Africa, many preachers the false ones you just mentioned!
So they collect alot of money from believers and spend them on lavish lifestyles. As for the blessings, Jesus got them for us. Thank you. Thank you for commenting. I agree whole heartedly. I have tried to express this similarly in some of my sermons. Thanks for the comment. My view has changed somewhat over the years: The Apostles taught that giving honors God. Give as much as you decide. The amount is a matter of conscience between you and God.
What commandment in Hebrews is being disannulled? It seems from the rest of the chapter that its talking about tithing. That is, Jesus was from the tribe of Judah, not from Levi, the tribe from which the Old Covenant priests came. An article you might enjoy!
Word of Faith, Seed Faith, blab it and grab it — these are not sound biblical teachings. We give not to get because we have already gotten the only thing that matters — Eternal Life. We give so that others can preach, teach, witness, evangelize, become missionaries sharing the good news of Eternal Life. Good article Lon. You speak of this because God has revealed this aspect to you.
Not everyone has had this revelation yet. So try not to let some of these comments be a discouragement to you. I tithe because 1 it honors God, and 2 i want to see the Gospel shared with the world. So I give cheerfully, knowing that my God is able to use my tithe to further His Kingdom here on earth. As people get a revelation of this, God will make them cheerful givers, and not do it to try to get His blessings.
You are not alone. Many people ask this question and various questions just like this.. For example, I was an awesome child just like you are an awesome man who shows the love of God and I had a beautiful mother inside and out who loved God so much.
For example unforgiveness scientifically and spiritually can make you sick. So can many other things happen like struggles for many other open doors. The Welcome I give is to the needy, to the food banks, the shelters, and helping others! A lot of people live below the poverty level and there are actually creatures out there they prey on those type of people to give their last dime.
Yes, the houses of worship, do you need to pay their bills but they do not need to see if their pastor has a posse with 20 people in it and , security with their wives wearing full length mink coats! Come on!
How dare them ask to give them more money! They can absolutely give their time, their love, volunteer in the shelters and the soup kitchens they do not have to give over and above so you can wear a full-length mink coat. Thank you Jennifer for your feedback. You make a good point regarding how some in the church handle the tithes.
That is very true, and very disappointing to see within the body of Christ. In which we stated in the blog that the church has been teaching to give to the church but they have missed teaching how a believer needs to handle their finances outside of the church at the same time. I think that is just a coincidence. I completely agree that we need to give.
Just my opinion. My parents are a great example for tithing in church. They always said give and you will receive. They tought us to be grateful for everything we have.
God would send some random people to our house with bread and more food. I totally look up to them. There is always food on the table and we do gather every week and there is a lot of us. So for me tithing is not to get rich but to receive blessings when you are in need. Yelena what a blessing that your parents set the example. We trust our kids will feel the same way when they get older. Thank you for reading and sharing your testimony. Great comments.
Giving is to me ever quite defined properly. Should members just give in actually dollar amounts and not take part in management of funds given, then all churches would be in the red. Those who have expertise in financial Matters need to be involved in giving their time as well funds. Stewardship is not always money. Churches need physical as well a mental help. What would happen if everyone came to church gave and went home?
Who is really caring? Look around you church, what can I do? Paint, Repair, or Be a Leader??? Yes Floscene our giving to the Lord includes our time, our tithes, our prayers, and most importantly our worship to Him. I have no problems with giving I know the doctrine and going forward I will Tithe, I have seen the benefits with my own eyes. Thank you for the reminder that I needed. Thank you Dee for being transparent I know that is not easy to do. What you experienced was purposeful so that you would come to know what God wants for you!
Thank you for such an eye opening article. Now I know, as a couple, we missed Gods best by not investing as we should have. Yes we tithe but we missed out on so much that God wanted for us by not following basic biblical principles of sowing or investing, get still presuming God will shelter us on a rainy day.
What maybe was supposed to a lesson now feels like a severe unending punishment. Please pray for us. We have 3 children and we lost almost everything. Ive cried out to God, looking for work for almost 3 years so we can start rebuilding over lives.
Please help. Lusanda thank you for being so transparent with your situation. What a great blessing it is however, that your parents are able to open their home for such a time as this. You may not be able to see it right now but there God always has a purpose. We hope this scripture encourages your heart while you wait upon Him. As I just found out what tithing was I came across this post. It confuses me as someone who is not religious to think that people in debt or struggling to pay their bills would give money to their church.
Why would he need money? The only thing that needs money is the church. If you stop tithing then you could always volunteer your time to help charity or your church instead and get your financial situation in order. God needs nothings from us, but He has given everything to us as a blessing. He gave us our lives, our families, our material and financial wealth.
We agree tithing is about our heart and honoring God with what He has given us. God expects us to honor Him with our money and be good stewards of what He has given us. Thank you for sharing.
I have in the last year had a falling out with my church more specifically my pastor. So I have been giving more to charities such as my tithing. Is this the same as giving to the church and what did you mean by giving a natural giving? God looks at the heart of your giving, so giving to other charities or people God has placed on your heart that has a need is good too. However it is important to find a church home and when you do the Bible talks about bringing your tithes to the storehouse which would be your church.
Hope that helps. I want to know what you mean by natural giving. I had a falling out with my pastor in my church. So I have been taking my money and giving to other charities, all Christian.
Is the same or different than tithing?
